BOLLYWOOD

Bollywood - So, what is it exactly? Well, if nothing else, it should sound familiar. That's right, Bollywood is referred to as India's equivalent to the United States' Hollywood. Based originally in Bombay, the term Bollywood was adapted from a combination of the words __Bo__mbay and Ho__llywood__.

Roughly defined, Bollywood is a film genre that incorporates many aspects of India's cultural wealth. The typical Bollywood film is characterized by bright colors, song and dance sequences, and a host of other conventions. The picture above provides a brief glimpse of what a Bollywood film looks like. The sets and costumes are very ornate and there is a great emphasis on movement and expression through dance. On average, a Bollywood film lasts for about three to four hours. The films are so long because the film plays out the entire story to completion. Not much is left out as far as content goes. Thus, by the end of a Bollywood film, the viewer has been taken on a roller coaster of different sensations: love, sorrow, suspense, adventure, anger, and the like.

Bollywood was originally considered a movement, but has now grown into a full-fledged genre because of its overwhelming popularity within India and with international audiences. Bollywood exports films to more than 95 countries around the world and actually produces more films annually than Hollywood does.

Some fun facts:

-Bollywood produces the world's largest output of films

-Indian films have the cheapest tickets (average is 20 cents a ticket)

-India is home to the largest film studio in the world, Ramoji Film City
